SOUND ART EXHIBITIONS TIMELINE, 1964-2004

HISTORIQUE DES EXPOSITIONS D’ART SONORE, 1964-2004

(Jérôme Joy)

[A new SAET version is in progress with the collaboration of Thom Holmes : SAET]

This timeline of sound art exhibitions was written in order to obtain a historical scope of the development of the sound art practices into the contexts of contemporary art and artistic shows in general[1]. The main criteria used for selection was a collective public presentation of sound and musical works (which overlap the concert framework such as installations, performances, etc., ie sound and music events which use another public configuration than the presentation on a stage, and which haven't a beginning nor an end) under a topic, a theme or a specific question and problem expressed by the title of the event. The hypothesis developed while probing this timeline would point out that, public forms of the « Music of Sounds »[2] are explored by artists and public organizations beyond the principle of genre (art, music). At the same time, it's interesting to distinguish approaches issued from contemporary art and more and more based on the "images of sound" (or it's iconography, postures and icons, and more generally, sound & music culture) than physical and articulation properties of organisations of sounds. Nevertheless through this timeline it's important to show that for most of such events before the 90's we can find origins in experimental music, sound performance (such as sound poetry for instance) and extensions of sculpture, and the intentions to explore intangibility, expanses & space, and experiences with environments, machines and systems[3] . This permits to signify a certain unabashed[4] approach and practice that are present into public events and shows along the first decennies, more than the recent ones. These hypothesis still remain to be explored.

...................... - Description : Mnam/Cci, CNAC Beaubourg Georges Pompidou, Paris

unsorted, SonicActsX festival
...................... - Description : Sonic Arts X, Paradiso, Amsterdam
An important traditional paradigm is the familiar distinction between art disciplines such as visual arts, music, dance, theatre and literature. Usually, the different works of information art are forced to fit within this classical categorisation model. Once we conclude that the traditional distinction between visual arts, music, etcetera does not work effectively for the information arts, we have to pose the question if there are any other categorisation models thinkable to provide us with a deeper and wider insight in the field of the newest arts. With Sonic Acts 10 — Unsorted our aim is to contribute to the emerging discussion in this field. The programme will particularly emphasise on the different collective working methods that are emerging in the new arts. It will include presentations by for instance record labels and other companies that operate as art collectives.

Overgaden Sound Art Festival
...................... - Description : Gallery Overgarden, Institute for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen
The Sound Art Festival will consist of an audio work database (audioteque), live performances, artist presentations, reading room, web-site, and eventually lectures and seminars. The aim is, within a simple and low-cost framework, to present a wide range of international artists working with sound/audio as a primary element within their artistic praxis. The focus is mainly on artists working with sound and crossover projects, rather than "musicians” and composers, but still there will be a very broad spectrum of artists and genres represented, covering all aspects of that blurry boarder between art and music.

...................... - Description : Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln
"Sound installation has always been closely related to public space. I think, in this respect the possibilities have not yet been tried out completely. A lot is still there to be explored. But I also think, there a possibilities within the web, within virtual space or non-space, to create "Klangkunst": to design spaces of exchange and communication. There is so much possible, still. And maybe these new sound productions don’t call themselves „Klangkunst“ anymore, but they will make audible, that this art forms does not only use space, but is definetely able to create it." Treble
...................... - Description : Sculpture Center, Long Island City, New York
Treble is a group exhibition that addresses the presence and influence of sound in the production of contemporary art. Challenging the categories of "sound art" and "visual art," this exhibition explores the spectrum between the two practices. Treble — in addition to defining a high pitch — also means triple, and the exhibition focuses on how sound informs the way artists think about sculpture, drawing, and architecture. Choosing to highlight the many ways in which sound can inform the production of contemporary art, this exhibition explores conceptual, material, and situational approaches that generate actual and/or implied aural experiences. The works in Treble exist beyond the limiting categories that define "sound art," "sculpture," "drawing," or "architecture," reflecting a generation of artists seeking to move freely between disciplines. These artists create meditations on drawing through sound, sound through drawing, sculpture as an ephemeral and time-based sonic experience, objects as potential sound, and architecture as an acoustic vessel.

Others' sounds -> Others' reasons - Sound psychogeographies (El Sonido del Otro / La Razòn del Otro - Psicogeografías Sonoras)
...................... - Description : Zeppelin - 7th Sound Art Festival (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, Orquestra Del Caos).

DRIFT, Sound Art and Experimental Music, Resonant Cities : Sonic Ghosts and Narrative Journey
...................... - Description : New Media Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland
How we listen and how aware we are of the seemingly 'noise' around us is at the heart of the wealth of works submitted and selected for Resonant Cities. The programmes are presented in three distinct themes. First is ‘Sonic Ghosts’: the works presented for this strand of programmes are reconstructed and processed moments in time and space, events now gone, found sound atmospheres and visceral rumblings. Those that have been selected come from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds: home-taping enthusiasts, musicians, phonographers, artists and radio art producers alike all move between recordings from hand-held cassette recorders to those utilising state of the art in ear binaural microphones. The programmes shift effortlessly from pure documentation, meanderring narratives to processed and structured field recordings that will take you on a sonic journey without leaving the comfort of your own headphones.

Rock’s Role : After Ryoanji
...................... - Description : Art in General, New York
Responding to John Cage’s musical translations of the famed Japanese rock garden, Ryonanji, the audio works in this exhibition are installed in a novel way to create an aural environment in which the pieces can be heard both individually and simultaneously. The speakers from which the sounds are broadcast are arranged to visually mimic the stones and space of the garden. Like the Ryonanji garden, which cannot be viewed in its entirety from any one point, Rock’s Role similarly offers a separate experience from each position within the gallery.

Digital III - International Sound Art Event
...................... - Description : MUU Mediabase, Helsinki
From April 16th until 18th, 2004, the Artists' Association MUU is bringing together local and international soundartists, musicians and media theorists over three days to facilitate the exchange and development of ideas, skills and practices in contemporary Sound Art. DIGITAL 3 at MUU attempts to renew the way in which we perceive the depths of sonic, visual and spatial Sound Art. Media and Sound Artists often have the same software at their disposal as musicians, but their approaches are however different. Synergies, which stimulate musicans and media artists, are triggered through the existing soft and hardware, but which possibilities and solutions are there to use technology for artistic results. How do artists manage, despite or because of this technology, to mark new aesthetic ground.

Elevator Music
...................... - Description : Tang Museum, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs (NY)
Most elevator trips are pretty mundane. You step in, push a button, watch the doors close and, seconds later, you've arrived at your floor. And despite the term "elevator music," most elevators don't even have music anymore. At the Tang Museum, visitors often find themselves riding up and down, forgetting to exit or even push a button. For them, the elevator is the destination, not the transportation. The museum is working on building a more interesting elevator experience by using the space as a canvas for exhibits, all labeled as "Elevator Music."

  2. According to Leigh Landy : La musique des sons / The Music of Sounds, Université Paris IV-Sorbonne (Eds.), Musicologie, informatique et nouvelles technologies (MINT) - Série Musique et nouvelles technologies no. 3, 2007. Abstract : For over a century musicians have been making music using the widest variety of sounds beyond the notes normally associated with music. For the last sixty years musicians have been able to use various forms of technology to assist in the creation of sound-based works. The Music of Sounds sets out to demonstrate that this musical corpus demonstrates paradigmatic behaviour despite the fact that its repertoire spans a vast horizon. This behaviour sets it apart, to an extent, from note-based music. The book also attempts to establish that much of the music is accessible to a larger public than the one it currently reaches. To achieve these two aims the repertoire is introduced through selected examples in order to illustrate paradigmatic aspects and elements related to accessibility. The field of study related to sound-based music is also delineated. Examples of sound-based musical research are presented to point out potential opportunities for those interested in this young repertoire., http://www.mti.dmu.ac.uk/~llandy/
